Winter 2023 | Oak, Odie’s oil | 96”x 38”x 32”

Exemplifying the growth and visual systems under the language of the forest based on quantitative observations and averages from a Rhode Island oak grove.

field notes
Used as a collaborative sketching tool, I sampled a selection of oak saplings, measuring their length, position, angles, and circumferences of branches over 1 cm in circumference. The data averages were processed to take into account common features such as bunches of branches sprouting within 5 cm of each other, the average angle placement of bunches, and the difference in measurements from the distance between branches, and the distance from the last branch to the top of a sapling. This data was used to compose the underlying growth patterns of the tree.
