structural weaving

Fall 2021 | Bent lamination, ash, wool | 30”x 28”x 26”

Structural Weaving is designed to use the strength of natural fibers as the main structure of the seat. The waft is set, and then pulled to seating height by the weave. Tension in the weave pulls the bent lamination into form. When one area of the seat is taken out of tension, another compensates into tension, creating a system of alternative structural elements.

Ash is used for the frame because of its open grain and great bending capabilities. The veneer was cut in shop to allow for more exploration into thickness and its advantages. Wool has natural shrinking capabilities, which allow for resizing the weaving as it stretches with age. This piece was made with non-toxic glue.
